Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program<\/a> in Jornal de Neg\u00f3cios<\/a><\/p>\n\n

The pilot group includes 19 producers comprising 12% of the olive grove area in the Alentejo, and 12 mills representing 10 olive oil brands.<\/p>\n\n

\"sustainability\"<\/figure>\n\n

The Alentejo Olive Oil Sustainability Program(PSAA<\/a>), a project led by the Olive Growers and Oil Millers Association of Portugal, is developing a benchmark with best practices and a customized guide for olive and olive oil producers to evolve in sustainable practices in the environmental, social, and economic dimensions.<\/p>\n\n

The tool, which is being developed together with the University of \u00c9vora, “will induce, measure and monitor the performance of economic agents producing an individual diagnostic report for each producer,” explains Gon\u00e7alo Moreira, manager of the PSAA, to Neg\u00f3cios.<\/p>\n\n

For a company to be recognized by the PSAA as sustainable, it will have to meet different parameters from different themes, in the olive grove or the mill, or both. All criteria will have different levels of sustainability, so that the company can increase its level of sustainability and improve its actions in a programmed way, based on an individual action plan. Each criterion allows the producer to be classified according to four levels of sustainability – pre-starter, starter, intermediate, and developed.<\/p>\n\n
